Gynecologic Oncologist

Many studies conducted over the past decade have shown that an ovarian cancer patient’s chance of survival is significantly improved when a gynecologic oncologist performs her surgery.

Accept your feelings

Remember it is okay to have feelings of guilt, anger, stress and worry. Try to get support in how to manage these feelings, because you might not want to burden your loved one with cancer with them.

Learn how to communicate with your loved one

Ask your loved one what she specifically needs from you. Try not to tell her how she should feel because everyone feels differently. Listen and learn.

Prepare for visits to the doctor

Keep a list of medications and questions you want to ask. Rely on trusted sources on the web, such as the government, national organizations or major hospitals, to help you understand what is happening medically. Feel free to ask the doctor to explain if you do not understand something.

Take care of yourself

Make time for yourself so that you can recharge. Try not to feel guilty that if you take time for yourself you are neglecting a loved one. If necessary, you can always read while your loved one is in the room or sleeping

Research

Ancillary Treatment Options

Radiation Therapy is:

  • energy form with effect of ablation, for abnormal growths in the body
  • how it is is delivered: by a beam, i.e. from outside the body or from seeds placed inside the body
Types of radiation
  • Electron beam
  • Proton beam

Pro/Con analysis

Cyberknife: Uses AI and Computer controlled delivery to improve precision of beam, directed as an aggregate of points of light, where computer can adjust each electron trajectory as needed to accommodate movement, like breathing. This aids treatment of moving body parts like the lung.
Proton Beam: Uses property of Protons that are absorbed more fully at target of the beam which reduces scatter of energy effect, and reduces the energy effect at the entrance to the body and the exit from the body. This reduces side effects since tissue adjacent to the target tissue receives less energy.
IMRT: Computer integrated and modulated radiation therapy allows computer modeling in 3D to aid in defining the target for treatment of elecron beam therapy.
Brachytherapy: Allows the source and the target to be in the same time-space dimension, reducing need for lateral tissue treatment to get the beam into or out of the target area. The radiation is released directly from the source placed within the tumor like Cesium Seeds placed in the prostate, or next to the tumor, like seeds placed at the top of the vagina or in space made in the breast tissue like mammocyte.
