Dr. Cirisano is also the founder of Women’s Cancer Care Fund, a public 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, CH 3273, headquartered in Delray Beach, FL. This organization is dedicated to improving the cure rates of women gynecologic cancer through strategic clinical research, treatment, and care delivery for gynecological cancers by working through community, national and international-based educational outreach programs.

Team Cirisano and I are pleased to share with our patients, supporters, and friends our progress and accomplishments over the past few years!

Our Philippines outreach program in June 2010 was very successful in the delivery of care to the less fortunate people of the Bicol province.  In conjunction with the Bicol Clinic, our foundation provided surgical services for 12 patients who underwent tumor removal in my care. My team also provided care and clinical support for 225 outpatient visits including 74 office procedures on patients who would have otherwise not received treatment.

In the forthcoming year the outreach program will be deployed to Cambodia in June-July 2011 in conjunction with the Sihanouk Hospital, Center of HOPE (SHCH).  The anticipated surgical program will include 15 major operations for gynecologic tumors and approximately 250 patient encounters in the outpatient center.  We look forward to this exciting opportunity to contribute and help make the world a better place!

Developments in the realm of clinical practice continue to increase the opportunity for screening and early diagnosis of women’s cancer. The new OVA1 Ovarian Cancer blood test was FDA approved this past January and is already being utilized in our office.  Combined with developments in genetic testing, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation analysis, the mortality from hereditary breast and ovarian cancer may be significantly reduced.

Progress in the arena of surgical management has been remarkable, and includes advances in minimally invasive surgery with the Da Vinci Robotic Laparoscopy procedure. This revolutionary technology allows tumors to be removed with incision sizes smaller than a penny, often completed through the belly button.  Such procedures include hysterectomy staging surgery for ovarian, uterine and cervical cancers with hospitalization time reduced to same day discharge. My expertise in this area continues to grow with over 250 procedures currently completed.

Following treatment for advanced gynecologic malignancies, progress continues in the area of disease control with changes in chemotherapy, biological therapies, and directed radiotherapy. The administration of chemotherapy is now routinely delivered directly to the abdominal cavity using a device called an intra-peritoneal port. This allows the treatment to be most toxic to the areas at risk for recurrence while reducing exposure to other areas of the body. The management of side effects of treatment also continues to improve with better control of nausea, vomiting, and anemia through administration of prophylactic anti-nausea medication and injections for bone marrow support.
